Where it came from
Released in 2015 on the Swiss label Unit Records, E-Motian’s represents a distinct collaborative effort between German jazz musicians Andreas Schmidt, Jan Roder, and Max Andrzejewski. The album was conceived as a platform for improvisational exploration, drawing on the trio’s deep roots in the Berlin experimental jazz scene. By synthesizing individual compositions with fluid, reactive interplay, the group sought to capture the kinetic energy of live performance within a studio environment.
The design and production of the record focus on a minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes the auditory experience of the trio's interplay. As a project, it reflects the broader philosophy of Unit Records, which frequently champions avant-garde and contemporary jazz projects that eschew mainstream commercial tropes. Upon its release, the album was noted for its nuanced balance between structured musical motifs and spontaneous sonic departures, earning it a place among the respected catalogs of European independent jazz labels.
