Where it came from
Released by Almighty Records, 'I Am What I Am' by Respect featuring Hannah Jones is a quintessential example of the label's high-energy dance-pop aesthetic that defined the UK club scene in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Almighty Records, founded by Rob Davis and Matt Pop, became known for producing driving, synth-heavy remixes of classic anthems, often featuring powerful vocalists like Jones to bring a contemporary edge to familiar tracks.
The recording leans into the label's signature production style, characterized by bright, polished arrangements intended for mainstream dance floors and pride celebrations. By reimagining the iconic anthem, the creative team sought to retain the emotional gravitas of the original while grounding it in the upbeat, house-influenced sonic landscape that was then dominating British independent charts and regional radio.
