Where it came from
A Funk Odyssey was released in 2001 as the fifth studio album by the British acid jazz band Jamiroquai. Emerging from the band's transition away from their traditional jazz-funk roots toward a more electronic and disco-influenced sound, the album was recorded amidst the high-profile departure of longtime members and a shift in the group's creative direction. It was designed to maintain the band's massive international commercial momentum following the global success of their previous release, Synkronized.
The album's artwork and aesthetic were crafted to reflect this shift toward futuristic, high-gloss production, with Jay Kay collaborating closely with art directors to curate a slick, modern image. Critical reception was generally positive regarding the band's technical polish and the tight, synth-driven arrangements, though some reviewers noted the departure from the more organic instrumental layers found on their earlier work. It remains a definitive artifact of the early 2000s commercial dance-pop landscape.
