Where it came from
Released in 2015 by the label Ligia Digital, this recording serves as a tribute to the long-standing synergy between the prestigious French brass manufacturer Antoine Courtois and the prolific composer and arranger Jean-Michel Defaye. The project highlights the technical capabilities of the Antoine Courtois trombone line, an instrument favored by orchestral professionals worldwide for its distinctively warm and centered sound. By featuring an ensemble of trombonists utilizing these specific instruments, the album functions as a sophisticated showcase of both the performer's artistry and the manufacturer's engineering legacy.
The repertoire on the disc explores the unique compositional voice of Jean-Michel Defaye, who is widely regarded for his significant contributions to the modern trombone literature. Defaye, known for his work as an arranger for artists like Charles Aznavour and as a composer of pedagogical brass music, infused these pieces with a blend of classical structure and accessible, lyrical melodicism. The album was received as a refined demonstration of chamber brass performance, celebrated by enthusiasts of the instrument for its precise execution and the clarity of the recording production.
