Where it came from
Memories of T was released in 2017 by the Ben Riley Monk Legacy Septet on the Concord Jazz label. The project was conceived by drummer Ben Riley, a legendary jazz percussionist who had famously played with Thelonious Monk during the 1960s. Riley formed this ensemble specifically to preserve and re-examine the complex, angular arrangements of Monk's compositions, viewing the septet as a way to keep the pianist's unique musical language alive through a modern lens.
The album serves as a tribute to the deep musical bond Riley shared with Monk, featuring arrangements that prioritize the rhythmic nuances and interplay essential to the original quartet’s sound. The septet format allowed for a broader harmonic palette while maintaining the structural integrity of the selected pieces. Upon its release, the recording was praised by critics for its faithful yet spirited interpretation, acting as a final testament to Riley’s dedication to maintaining the legacy of his longtime mentor.
