Milan Svoboda Q & Tony Lakatos

Released in 1998 on the Pylyjazz label, this collaboration captures a vital moment in the late-nineties European jazz scene, bringing together the acclaimed Czech composer and pianist Milan Svoboda with the Hungarian-born saxophonist Tony Lakatos. The recording functions as a sophisticated dialogue between Svoboda's meticulous, harmonically rich arrangements and Lakatos’s robust, post-bop sensibilities. It was produced during a period when both musicians were highly active within the Central European jazz circuit, aiming to bridge the gap between structured chamber jazz and more fluid, improvisational performance styles.

The album reflects the aesthetic of Pylyjazz, a label dedicated to documenting the nuanced development of jazz talent in post-communist Europe. Svoboda’s design and compositional approach prioritize clarity and thematic development, providing a balanced environment for Lakatos, a mainstay of the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, to showcase his technical dexterity. Upon its release, the record was recognized by critics as a professional and thoughtful contribution to the regional jazz discography, praised for its tight ensemble interaction and the seamless integration of its distinct musical voices.
