Where it came from
Released in 1993 on the Olarin Musiikki label, the self-titled album Niekku represents a significant moment in the revitalization of Finnish folk music. The ensemble formed in the late 1980s as part of a broader movement to modernize traditional Karelian and Finnish musical motifs by blending them with contemporary instrumental arrangements and jazz-inflected compositions.
The album serves as a culmination of the group's efforts to bring the kantele and other traditional instruments into a more accessible, chamber-folk context. The arrangements were crafted to preserve the evocative, melancholic nature of Northern folk melodies while employing modern studio production techniques to achieve a clean, resonant sound that was well-received by critics for its balance of authenticity and innovation.
