Where it came from
Released in 2014 on the Creative Sources label, O Monstro serves as a representative document of the European free jazz and avant-garde improvisation circuit. The trio, consisting of bassist Gonçalo Almeida, saxophonist John Dikeman, and drummer George Hadow, recorded this session to capture the raw, kinetic energy of their live collaborations. Creative Sources, founded by Ernesto Rodrigues, is widely recognized for documenting experimental music that prioritizes non-idiomatic improvisation and sonic exploration.
The album reflects a minimalist design aesthetic common to the Creative Sources catalog, which typically emphasizes the auditory content over elaborate visual packaging. The collaboration represents a meeting point for these three active figures in the European scene, who were seeking to push the boundaries of acoustic trio dynamics. Critics of the experimental genre generally received the work as a focused demonstration of technical proficiency and rigorous collective listening.
