Provenance

Where it came from

The 1967 one-cent coin was issued to commemorate the centennial of the Canadian Confederation, marking one hundred years since the British North America Act of 1867. Unlike the standard twig-and-leaf design, this special edition featured a rock dove in flight, symbolizing peace and the progressive spirit of the era. The decision to redesign the entire circulating coinage for the anniversary was a significant national project intended to foster Canadian identity and pride during a year of intense public celebration.

The reverse design was created by the Canadian artist Alex Colville, who was commissioned by the Royal Canadian Mint to produce a series of designs representing Canadian wildlife. Colville aimed for a minimalist and modern aesthetic that departed from the traditional heraldic symbols of the monarchy. The obverse features the second effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Arnold Machin, which was the standard portrait used on Commonwealth coinage throughout the mid-20th century.
