Where it came from
The 2012 Australian 1 Dollar coin celebrating the theme of 'Friendship with China' was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and the People's Republic of China. This commemorative issue reflects the growing economic and cultural ties between the two nations during the early 21st century, serving as a formal numismatic acknowledgement of bilateral cooperation.
The coin features the standard fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley on the obverse. The reverse design, created by Royal Australian Mint designer Aleksandra Stokic, incorporates stylized depictions of traditional cultural symbols from both nations, including a dragon and a kangaroo, woven together to represent the spirit of partnership. The design was received as a respectful, albeit formal, diplomatic gesture, following the Mint's tradition of marking significant international anniversaries with limited collector issues.
