1 Dollar - Elizabeth II (Pikachu)

This coin was issued in 2001 by the South Pacific island nation of Niue as part of a commemorative legal tender series celebrating the global popularity of the Pokémon franchise. As Niue maintains a free association with New Zealand, its currency is produced through established minting channels to mark significant cultural milestones or international trends, in this instance capitalizing on the immense success of the Pokémon trading card game and animated series that had become a worldwide phenomenon by the turn of the millennium.

The design features Pikachu, the mascot of the Pokémon franchise, rendered in a colorful enamel finish against a silver-plated base. While standard circulation coins focus on national motifs, this piece reflects a trend of the early 2000s where small island nations issued novelty coins featuring popular culture icons to appeal to thematic collectors. The design was intended to bridge the gap between numismatics and popular fandom, and while it was met with skepticism by traditional coin collectors, it remains a notable curiosity in the history of pop-culture collectibles.
