Where it came from
The 1804 1 Keping coin was commissioned by the East India Company for use in the British settlement of Prince of Wales Island, modern-day Penang, Malaysia. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Company struggled to provide adequate small-denomination currency for its growing administrative and trading centers in the Straits Settlements, necessitating the production of localized tokens to facilitate day-to-day commerce.
The coin was struck at the Soho Mint in Birmingham, which was operated by the renowned industrialist Matthew Boulton. Boulton utilized advanced steam-powered minting technology to produce these pieces, which feature an Arabic inscription on the reverse—referencing the settlement and the year—and the iconic East India Company bale mark on the obverse. The design was intended to be easily recognizable and durable for use in a humid, tropical climate, and the coins eventually became a staple of regional trade.
