Where it came from
This 100-dollar coin from the Cook Islands was issued in 2024 to commemorate the 90th birthday of Empress Michiko of Japan. Like many issues from the Cook Islands, this piece is designed primarily for the numismatic collector market, focusing on themes of international diplomacy and global monarchy. The release serves as a tribute to the Empress's long-standing public service and her historical significance as the first commoner to marry into the Japanese Imperial Family.
The coin features an official portrait of His Majesty King Charles III on the obverse, as the Cook Islands recognizes the British monarch as its head of state. The reverse design typically incorporates intricate engraving techniques common to modern commemorative coinage, aiming to blend traditional aesthetic elegance with the high-relief finishes desired by contemporary collectors. These pieces are produced under the authority of the Cook Islands government and are officially recognized legal tender, though their primary purpose is commemorative rather than transactional.
