Where it came from
The 1996 100 Dollars coin featuring Mickey Mouse was minted by the Cook Islands as part of a commemorative series celebrating the enduring global popularity of Disney characters. During the 1990s, the Cook Islands, along with other small island nations, frequently issued legal tender coinage featuring pop culture icons to appeal to thematic numismatic collectors and generate revenue through international interest.
The design draws upon the classic aesthetic of the mid-20th-century Disney animation style, featuring a detailed rendering of Mickey Mouse. These coins were produced under official license from The Walt Disney Company. While strictly legal tender within the Cook Islands, the coins were primarily marketed as collectibles rather than for general circulation, catering to a niche market of Disney enthusiasts and coin collectors who value the intersection of numismatics and modern entertainment history.
