Where it came from
The 1946 Canadian five-cent piece was minted during the transition period following the Second World War. It retains the obverse effigy of King George VI, designed by T.H. Paget, which features the monarch in profile. The reverse displays the traditional beaver design by G.E. Kruger-Gray, an icon of Canadian numismatics that emphasizes the nation's natural resources and wilderness.
This specific year is noted for the inclusion of the 'IND: IMP:' title in the Latin inscription surrounding the King’s portrait, signifying 'Emperor of India.' This abbreviation was dropped from Canadian coinage in 1948 following the independence of India and Pakistan. The transition represents a significant moment in the shifting political identity of the British Commonwealth during the mid-20th century.
