½ Liang (Type 5; with lines)

The Ban Liang coin represents a pivotal moment in Chinese numismatic history, emerging during the transition from the Warring States period to the unification of China under the Qin Dynasty. The standardization of currency was a central component of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's efforts to centralize power, replacing a disparate array of regional spade, knife, and shell currencies with a uniform, circular coin featuring a square hole. This design, which allowed coins to be carried on cords, became the template for Chinese coinage for over two thousand years.

The specific Type 5 variant, characterized by the inclusion of raised lines or borders on the obverse, reflects the technical evolution of minting processes during the Western Han dynasty as they refined the initial Qin designs. While the inscription simply reads 'half liang' in archaic seal script, the precision of the casting indicates a shift toward more formal state-controlled production. Historically, these coins were received as a necessary tool for imperial commerce, though they were often criticized by contemporary scholars for their inconsistent weight and quality compared to the idealized standards.
