X Réis - Pedro II (Porto)

The 10 Réis coin minted in 1693 during the reign of Pedro II of Portugal was produced specifically for circulation within the Portuguese colonial territories in Africa, particularly Angola. At this time, the Portuguese crown sought to formalize monetary exchange in their coastal outposts to better facilitate trade in commodities, most notably enslaved people and ivory. The coin reflects the mercantilist priorities of the late 17th-century Portuguese Empire, which relied on these regional issues to maintain economic hegemony in their overseas holdings.

The design features the crowned coat of arms of Portugal, a standard motif intended to assert the authority of the Braganza dynasty across the Atlantic. These copper issues were struck in Porto, reflecting the centralizing efforts of the Portuguese mints to provide standardized currency for their colonies.
