Where it came from
Abbott: 1979 is a five-issue limited series published by BOOM! Studios, serving as a sequel to the acclaimed 2018 supernatural noir comic Abbott. Created by writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Sami Kivelä, the series continues the story of Elena Abbott, a tenacious Black investigative reporter navigating the racially charged and supernatural landscape of 1970s Detroit. The 1979 installment shifts the narrative to focus on the socio-political tensions of the era, weaving elements of horror and fantasy into a grounded exploration of institutional corruption.
The visual identity of the series, shaped by Kivelä's moody, atmospheric pencils and Mattia Iacono's vibrant color palette, was designed to evoke the grit of late-seventies pulp fiction while maintaining a modern cinematic flair. Issue #4 advances the central mystery as Abbott confronts the occult forces entrenched in the city's power structures. Upon release, the series was well-regarded for its commitment to character-driven storytelling and its thoughtful blending of historical commentary with urban fantasy tropes.
