Airboy #14

Airboy #14 was published in 1946 by Hillman Periodicals during the height of the Golden Age of comics. As part of a series featuring the aviation adventurer Davy Nelson, this issue continued the character's legacy of aerial heroics and wartime-inflected excitement. The narrative reflected the post-war transition in comic book themes, moving away from purely Axis-focused conflicts toward more imaginative and escapist adventures that defined the late 1940s landscape.

The character of Airboy was co-created by Charles Biro and Dick Wood, with art often overseen by the prolific Biro himself. The visual style of the Hillman line was characterized by dynamic, action-oriented panels that leaned into the bold, colorful aesthetic common to mid-century newsstand comics. While individual issues like number 14 are now primarily sought after for their historical placement in the Airboy run, they are recognized by collectors as quintessential examples of the independent superhero archetypes that flourished before the implementation of the Comics Code Authority.
