Where it came from
A.K.A. Goldfish: Queen #1 was released in 1996 by Graphitti Designs, serving as a spin-off from Brian Michael Bendis's acclaimed noir crime series, Goldfish. The work emerged during a formative period for the creator, establishing his reputation for gritty, sharp-witted dialogue and non-linear narrative structures that would eventually define his influential career in independent and mainstream comics.
The issue features Bendis's signature stark, high-contrast ink work, which emphasizes the shadowy, moral ambiguity of his characters. The series was designed to explore the criminal underworld of Cleveland through a cynical, cinematic lens, garnering significant critical attention for its stylistic boldness and earning Bendis the attention of publishers like Marvel and DC. It remains a notable example of mid-90s creator-owned independent comics.
