Provenance

Where it came from

Akiko, created by Mark Crilley, debuted in the mid-1990s as a comic book series published by Sirius Entertainment. The story follows a young Japanese-American girl who is whisked away to the planet Smoo, a fantastical world populated by strange creatures and grand adventures. Crilley, who worked as an English teacher in Japan before his career in comics, drew heavily on his experiences and a desire to create a whimsical, character-driven narrative that bridged the gap between Eastern and Western visual sensibilities.

Issue #27 is part of the long-running original series that gained a dedicated following for its gentle, imaginative tone and detailed, cross-hatched artwork. Unlike many of the superhero-dominated titles of the era, Akiko focused on themes of friendship and personal growth. The series was well-received for its all-ages accessibility, eventually transitioning from the individual comic book format into a popular series of illustrated novels published by Random House, which significantly broadened its audience.
