All-Star Squadron #34

All-Star Squadron #34 was published by DC Comics in June 1984 as part of a series intended to explore the golden age of comic book heroes during the Second World War. Created by writer Roy Thomas, the series served as a vehicle for retroactively fitting obscure 1940s characters into the established DC continuity while grounding them in historical events. This specific issue features art by Rick Hoberg and Jerry Ordway, who were tasked with maintaining a classic aesthetic that honored the pulpy style of the era's original illustrations.

The narrative of this issue reflects the ambitious scope of Thomas's storytelling, which often prioritized dense world-building and complex continuity over singular, standalone adventures. It fits within the larger 'Crisis on Infinite Earths' lead-up era, showcasing the publisher's efforts to consolidate its multiverse. Critics at the time praised the book for its meticulous attention to period detail and its ability to treat historical fiction with the same narrative weight as contemporary superhero sagas.
