Where it came from
Ayakashi Kitsune no Kyoto Uramachi Annainin, authored and illustrated by Hiroki Kusumoto, is a manga series centered on the folklore-steeped atmosphere of Kyoto. The series explores the intersection between the human world and the realm of the supernatural, utilizing the kitsune, or fox spirit, as a bridge for narratives that blend traditional Japanese legend with contemporary storytelling tropes. Published within the seinen demographic, the work aims to evoke a sense of nostalgic wonder while grounding its more whimsical elements in the recognizable geography of the city.
The second volume continues the thematic trajectory established in the series debut, further developing the interactions between the protagonist and the various spirits inhabiting Kyoto's hidden locales. Kusumoto's art style is characterized by detailed renderings of historical architecture and a soft, atmospheric approach to the spirit entities, which received positive critical attention for its ability to balance lighthearted fantasy with subtle, darker undertones. The series reflects a broader trend in Japanese media that leans into local heritage and regional mythology to create immersive, character-driven supernatural dramas.
