Baku-Gal: Reiwa Gal ga Bakumatsu wo Ageru↑↑ #1

Baku-Gal: Reiwa Gal ga Bakumatsu wo Ageru↑↑, serialized in Shogakukan's Gessan (Monthly Shonen Sunday), serves as a playful reimagining of the Bakumatsu period of Japanese history. The narrative centers on a contemporary fashion-conscious girl who finds herself transported back to the 19th century, applying her modern 'gyaru' sensibilities to navigate the political and social upheaval of the shogunate's final years. The series debuted as part of a trend in manga that blends historical drama with lighthearted, anachronistic comedy.

The character design and visual direction emphasize a sharp contrast between traditional Edo-period aesthetics and vibrant, modern pop culture iconography. By placing a girl steeped in Reiwa-era trends into the stark, high-stakes environment of the mid-1800s, the manga explores themes of cultural clashes and adaptability. The series has been received as a creative departure from standard historical fiction, praised for its energetic art style and its ability to modernize traditional tropes through a whimsical lens.
