Batman #406

Batman issue 406 was published by DC Comics in April 1987 as part of the Year One storyline. Written by Frank Miller with art by David Mazzucchelli, this issue serves as the third chapter of the acclaimed arc, which was intended to reboot the Batman mythos for a modern era. The narrative explores Bruce Wayne's early, often clumsy attempts to establish himself as a crime-fighter in a corrupt Gotham City, grounding his origins in a gritty, realistic tone that moved away from the more campy interpretations of the character.

David Mazzucchelli’s design work on this issue is frequently cited for its stark, minimalist aesthetic and clever use of shadow, which perfectly complemented Miller’s grounded script. The collaboration was met with widespread critical acclaim upon release, and the Year One arc is now considered one of the definitive portrayals of Batman's inception. Its success not only redefined the character for years to come but also influenced the visual and narrative style of future Batman adaptations in film and animation.
