Where it came from
Batman #468 was published by DC Comics in August 1991, serving as part of the ongoing Batman series during a transitional era for the character. The issue features the conclusion of the 'Dark Knight, Dark City' story arc, written by Peter Milligan and illustrated by Kieron Dwyer. This narrative is frequently cited for its atmospheric, psychological approach to the Batman mythos, blending traditional superhero tropes with elements of occult horror and gothic mystery.
The creative team intended to explore the darker, more esoteric roots of Gotham City, positioning the city itself as a character with a sinister history. Kieron Dwyer’s illustrative style provided a grounded, gritty aesthetic that complemented Milligan's dense, intellectual script. While the story was initially met with mixed reactions due to its departure from conventional action-driven narratives, it has since earned a reputation among collectors and fans as an innovative, cult-classic exploration of Batman's psyche.
