Where it came from
Batman #587 was published by DC Comics in March 2001 as part of the 'Officer Down' crossover event, which spanned multiple titles within the Batman line. The story arc centered on the shooting of Commissioner James Gordon, a pivotal moment that forced the Gotham City Police Department and the Bat-family to navigate the fallout of the crime. This issue served as a crucial chapter in the narrative, focusing on the psychological impact of the shooting on Bruce Wayne and the procedural investigation led by detectives.
The issue features the creative work of writer Greg Rucka and artist Rick Burchett, who were central figures in the Batman editorial office at the time. Rucka was widely praised for his grounded, noir-inspired approach to the character, moving away from high-concept superhero tropes to focus on gritty police work and character-driven drama. Burchett's clean, dynamic line work complemented this grounded tone, aiming to capture the somber atmosphere of a city grappling with the loss of its most steadfast ally.
