Where it came from
Batman #608, published in 2002, marks the beginning of the highly influential Hush storyline written by Jeph Loeb with interior art by Jim Lee. This issue served as a soft relaunch for the Batman title, intended to reintroduce the character's expansive rogues' gallery to a new generation of readers while establishing a darker, more cinematic aesthetic. The narrative was designed to be accessible to casual fans while providing long-time readers with a complex mystery that spanned the entire Batman mythos.
The visual direction of the issue is defined by Jim Lee’s transition into the DC Universe, characterized by his meticulous detail and a modernized design for Batman's costume. The art style, supported by Scott Williams’ precise inking and Alex Sinclair’s vibrant coloring, set a benchmark for comic aesthetics in the early 2000s. The issue was received with significant commercial success and critical acclaim, largely credited with revitalizing interest in monthly Batman titles and solidifying Lee's status as one of the most prominent artists in the medium.
