Where it came from
Batman and the Outsiders #23, released in July 1985, serves as a quintessential example of the mid-1980s DC Comics output. The series was created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo, intended to showcase Batman leading a team of unconventional heroes outside of the traditional Justice League structure. By issue #23, the book was navigating a landscape of shifting team dynamics and complex, serialized storytelling that defined the period's approach to the superhero genre.
The interior art for this period was provided by Jim Aparo, a definitive Batman artist whose clean lines and expressive character work were highly regarded for their consistency and clarity. The cover art, featuring the team in action, aimed to maintain the title's reputation for high-stakes interpersonal drama. As a part of a long-running series during the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths era, the issue reflects the creative efforts to expand the Batman mythos into more worldly, espionage-adjacent territory.
