Where it came from
Released in 2024, The Last Halloween serves as a direct sequel to the iconic 1996 limited series Batman: The Long Halloween. Created to celebrate the legacy of the original story by Jeph Loeb and the late Tim Sale, this project was conceived as a final tribute to Sale, featuring the work of various guest artists who were inspired by his distinct style. The narrative picks up after the events of the original mystery, exploring the psychological toll on Gotham City and its inhabitants.
The issue features cover art by Brian Azzarello and a team of contributors honoring Sale’s aesthetic through a collaborative creative effort. The series was designed to complete the vision Loeb and Sale had for the story, acting as a narrative bridge that maintains the noir-inspired, atmospheric tone that defined the original run. Critical reception has focused on the project's role as a commemorative piece for Sale’s contribution to the Batman mythos.
