Berni Wrightson: Master of the Macabre #3

Berni Wrightson: Master of the Macabre was a prestige-format anthology series published by Pacific Comics beginning in 1983. The series was designed to showcase Wrightson’s mastery of atmospheric horror and intricate pen-and-ink illustration, serving as a dedicated venue for his adaptation of classic gothic literature and original macabre tales. Issue number three continued this mandate, gathering various stories that highlight Wrightson's signature cross-hatching technique and his ability to conjure haunting, Victorian-inspired dread.

The creative direction of the series was largely driven by Wrightson himself, who sought to break away from the constraints of traditional comic book paper quality and color palettes of the era. By utilizing high-quality paper and often black-and-white printing, the series allowed the stark contrast of his line work to take center stage. Upon release, the series was received by critics and fans as a definitive collection of Wrightson's horror work, cementing his reputation as a master of the genre and a significant influence on dark fantasy illustration.
