Betty and Veronica #173

Betty and Veronica issue 173 was published by Archie Comics in 1971 as part of the long-running series focused on the social lives and rivalry of the two primary female leads of the Archie universe. During this era, the title leaned into the quintessential suburban aesthetic of Riverdale, capturing the lighthearted high school dynamics that defined the brand's mid-century output. This specific period of Archie Comics was characterized by a transition toward slightly more contemporary fashion and social scenarios while maintaining the house style established in the early post-war years.

The interior art and cover design were consistent with the house style maintained by the Archie editorial team, prioritizing clear, expressive character work that emphasized the archetypal roles of the 'girl next door' and the 'wealthy socialite.' These issues were designed for high-volume newsstand distribution, making them a staple of American youth culture for decades. Because these comics were produced as disposable entertainment rather than prestige editions, they were historically treated as ephemeral, which contributes to the nostalgic appeal of surviving copies found in modern collections.
