The Billiken, a charming imp-like creature with a pointed head and mischievous smile, was created in 1908 by art teacher Florence Pretz. She claimed the design came to her in a dream, and it was quickly patented and trademarked, becoming a widespread cultural phenomenon. Marketed as the 'God of Things as They Ought to Be,' the figure was intended to serve as a whimsical good luck charm, representing a blend of various Eastern and Western mythological archetypes that resonated with the optimistic spirit of the early twentieth century.

The initial production and licensing of Billiken imagery saw an explosion in American consumer culture, appearing on everything from dolls and coin banks to jewelry and political buttons. Pretz’s design gained international traction through the St. Louis-based Billiken Company, which aggressively promoted the figure’s status as a lucky talisman. While its popularity waned after a few years, it remains a notable example of early twentieth-century American novelty manufacturing and the era's fascination with mass-marketed folk-style icons.
