Where it came from
Birds of Prey #42 was published by DC Comics in June 2002 as part of the long-running series created by Chuck Dixon. The title centered on an all-female team of superheroes, primarily Black Canary and Oracle, set within the broader Batman universe. This specific issue was written by Gilbert Hernandez, a prominent figure in independent comics known for his work on Love and Rockets, which marked a distinct creative pivot for the mainstream superhero title.
The interior art for this issue was provided by Phil Jimenez, a staple artist for DC during this era, known for his dynamic, detail-oriented style that heavily influenced the aesthetic of the Birds of Prey brand. The issue explores complex character dynamics under Hernandez's experimental narrative approach. At the time of its release, the run was noted by critics for its willingness to subvert traditional superhero tropes, aiming for a more introspective and character-driven tone than standard team-up books of the period.
