Blazing Combat: World War I and World War II #1

Blazing Combat #1 was published in 1965 by Warren Publishing, a company primarily known for its horror magazines like Creepy and Eerie. Edited by Archie Goodwin, the series was designed as a sophisticated, anti-war departure from the traditional gung-ho military comics of the era. The anthology format allowed for diverse storytelling that focused on the grim realities, moral complexities, and human cost of conflict rather than glorifying battle.

The visual identity of the series was defined by legendary illustrators, including Wally Wood, Frank Frazetta, and Gene Colan, who provided stark, atmospheric artwork to match Goodwin’s poignant scripts. Despite its critical acclaim for high-quality writing and illustration, the series faced severe distribution difficulties and pressure from military distributors who objected to its critical stance on war, leading to its cancellation after only four issues.
