Where it came from
Blue Beetle #2 was published in 1967 by Charlton Comics, following the character's transition from his Golden Age origins to the modernized Ted Kord persona. This issue is part of the iconic Action Heroes line, which was spearheaded by editor Dick Giordano to revitalize Charlton's stable of superheroes by hiring talent who would go on to shape the future of the industry.
The issue features artwork by Steve Ditko, who famously co-created Spider-Man and Doctor Strange at Marvel. Ditko utilized the Blue Beetle to explore his own objectivist philosophical interests and experimental narrative techniques, moving away from traditional superhero tropes. Upon release, the series was received as a stylistic departure from the mainstream fare of the era, eventually gaining a cult following for Ditko’s distinct visual storytelling and the clever gadgetry defined in these early issues.
