Blue Bolt Weird Tales of Terror #116

Blue Bolt Weird Tales of Terror #116 was published in 1952 during the twilight of the original Blue Bolt series, which transitioned from a traditional superhero title into the horror genre following the post-war decline of costumed crime-fighters. By the early 1950s, publisher Star Publications shifted its focus to capitalize on the burgeoning popularity of macabre and suspense-driven comic books, reflecting the industry-wide pivot toward sensationalist, eerie storytelling meant to unsettle juvenile and adult readers alike.

The creative direction of this era was heavily influenced by the competitive landscape of Pre-Code horror, where artistic teams prioritized intense, evocative cover illustrations and grim, atmospheric narratives. Issue #116 exemplifies the stylistic conventions of its time, utilizing bold, dramatic ink work to lean into the 'weird tales' aesthetic that defined the later years of the series before the introduction of the Comics Code Authority brought an end to this provocative creative period.
