Boris the Bear #8

Boris the Bear was launched in 1986 by Dark Horse Comics as part of the burgeoning independent comics movement of the mid-1980s. Created by James Dean Smith, the series was conceived as a satirical response to the gritty, hyper-violent vigilante characters that dominated the industry at the time. By presenting a cynical, anthropomorphic bear who systematically targeted and dismantled various superhero tropes, Smith offered a commentary on the trends defining the era.

Issue number eight arrived during the height of the title's run, which is remembered for its distinct aesthetic and sharp, often irreverent tone. James Dean Smith handled both writing and illustration duties, employing a style that balanced cartoonish character designs with dark, grounded narratives. The series was well-regarded by critics and underground enthusiasts for its subversive humor and its willingness to poke fun at the very medium it inhabited, solidifying its place as a cult classic of the 1980s independent comics scene.
