Captain America #426

Published in 1994, Captain America #426 is a notable chapter in the series written by Mark Gruenwald, who served as both writer and editor for the title for nearly a decade. This issue belongs to the 'Streets of Poison' era, a period defined by Gruenwald's attempt to ground Steve Rogers in more contemporary, gritty social issues, focusing on the character's struggle to maintain his moral compass while dealing with a government that often distrusted his independence.

The cover art and interior illustrations reflect the house style of 1990s Marvel Comics, characterized by dynamic action sequences and intricate detail work by artist Dave Hoover. At the time of its release, the series was navigating a transition toward darker storytelling tropes common in the industry, yet Gruenwald remained committed to exploring the ideological conflicts between Captain America's traditional values and the rapidly changing political climate of the mid-1990s.
