Challengers of the Unknown #17

Challengers of the Unknown #17, published in 1960, stands as a notable entry in the long-running DC Comics series originally created by Jack Kirby. By this stage in the series, the book had transitioned away from Kirby's direct oversight, featuring art by Bob Brown and scripts that maintained the core premise of four adventurers—Ace, Rocky, Red, and Prof—who narrowly escaped death and subsequently dedicated their lives to high-stakes, science-fiction infused peril.

The design and tone of this era reflect the shift toward the more conventional adventure-comic aesthetic of the late Silver Age. While the series initially garnered a cult following for its inventive, Kirby-esque layouts and existential themes, issues from this period are recognized by collectors as examples of how the title evolved to fit the standard house style of the DC editorial office under Mort Weisinger, prioritizing action-heavy plots and distinct, brightly colored character archetypes.
