Claw the Unconquered #10

Claw the Unconquered #10 was published by DC Comics in 1976 during a period when the publisher was aggressively expanding its roster of sword-and-sorcery titles to compete with the popularity of Conan the Barbarian. Created by writer David Michelinie and artist Ernie Chan, the series centered on Val, a barbarian warrior cursed with a demonic, claw-like hand that drove him toward violence. The title sought to tap into the grim, high-fantasy aesthetic prevalent in mid-seventies pulp fiction and comic book storytelling.

The character design for Claw was heavily influenced by the muscular, dynamic art styles of the era, with Ernie Chan providing a visual grit that defined the book's tone. As the series progressed toward its conclusion, the creative team focused on blending personal tragedy with traditional quest narratives. While the series was relatively short-lived compared to DC's long-running superhero staples, it has since gained a reputation among genre enthusiasts as a notable example of the publisher's experimentation with darker, non-superhero fantasy archetypes.
