Where it came from
Published in July 1971, Conan the Barbarian #7 represents a pivotal moment in the development of Robert E. Howard’s Cimmerian within the Marvel Comics universe. Written by Roy Thomas with cover art by John Buscema and inks by Sal Buscema, this issue served as the conclusion to a two-part adaptation of the Howard short story 'The Garden of Fear.' The series was instrumental in establishing the dark, sword-and-sorcery aesthetic that would define Marvel’s non-superhero titles throughout the 1970s.
The creative team aimed to ground the character in a gritty, high-fantasy tone that distinguished the title from the more colorful and urban-focused comic books of the era. John Buscema’s dynamic figure work and cinematic panel layouts were widely praised by readers and critics alike, helping to solidify the series as a commercial success. The issue is noted by collectors for its contribution to the expansion of the Hyborian Age lore and its role in cementing the enduring partnership between Thomas and Buscema as the definitive architects of Marvel's Conan mythos.
