Contest of Champions II #1

Contest of Champions II, released in 1999, served as a spiritual successor to the seminal 1982 miniseries that first brought the Marvel Universe together for a grand, orchestrated battle. This five-issue limited series was penned by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Oscar Jimenez, aiming to capitalize on the popularity of competitive crossover events while exploring the ethics of super-powered conflict. The story was prompted by the schemes of the Brood Queen and the Shaper of Worlds, who forced Earth's heroes into a series of gladiatorial matches to resolve planetary disputes.

The visual direction sought to capture the high-stakes, action-oriented aesthetic prevalent in late 1990s comic book art. While the original 1982 series is remembered for being the first of its kind, this sequel was designed to feel more integrated into the then-current Marvel continuity. Critical reception at the time was mixed, with some readers enjoying the spectacle of rare hero-versus-hero matchups and others finding the underlying narrative justification for the fighting to be somewhat thin compared to the novelty of the original series.
