Where it came from
Critters #6 was published in 1987 by Fantagraphics Books as part of their long-running anthology series. The series was designed to serve as a showcase for independent and alternative comics, providing a platform for creators to experiment with genre-bending stories that diverged from the mainstream superhero narratives dominating the industry at the time. This particular issue continued the anthology's commitment to showcasing diverse artistic voices within the small-press community.
The editorial vision behind Critters was steered by Kim Thompson and Gary Groth, who aimed to bridge the gap between underground comix and the burgeoning direct-market scene. The design and interior contents of issue #6 reflected this eclectic mission, featuring a mix of serialized features and short, self-contained narratives. While individual stories within the anthology saw varying levels of critical recognition, the series as a whole is remembered for its significant role in establishing the viability of independent comics in the late 1980s.
