Where it came from
Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning, released in 2024, is a limited comic series published by Titan Comics, expanding upon the lore of the acclaimed Dark Souls video game franchise developed by FromSoftware. The series was created to bridge narratives within the bleak, decaying world of Lordran, focusing on the dark themes of cycle, despair, and resilience that define the series' aesthetic and environmental storytelling approach.
The series features writing by George Mann and intricate interior art by Piotr Kowalski, whose work is known for capturing the visceral, gothic horror elements of the game. Designed to mirror the challenging and cryptic nature of the source material, the visual direction prioritizes atmosphere and shadow, aiming to translate the series' hallmark sense of inevitable decay onto the page. It was received as a faithful expansion by the established community, noted for its commitment to the game's established visual language and melancholic tone.
