Where it came from
DC Comics Presents #72, published in August 1984, arrived during a period when DC Comics was experimenting with team-up dynamics to bridge the gap between their flagship heroes and more experimental characters. The series was designed to showcase Superman in pairings with diverse members of the DC Universe, often utilizing secondary characters who lacked their own solo titles to maintain reader interest across a broader catalog.
This specific issue features a script by Paul Kupperberg and artwork by Rick Hoberg and Rick Magyar, centering on a team-up between Superman and Doctor Fate. The story leans into the mystical elements of the DC mythos, providing a contrast to Superman's science-fiction origins. It reflects the mid-1980s editorial strategy of exploring high-concept fantasy themes before the massive narrative resets that would follow in 1986.
