Die Erzählungen von Lederstrumpf #5

Die Erzählungen von Lederstrumpf #5 is part of a West German comic book adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking Tales, released during the mid-1950s. Published by Walter Lehning Verlag, this series sought to capitalize on the enduring popularity of frontier literature in post-war Germany, translating the rugged American wilderness into the popular medium of the adventure comic.

The illustrations in this series often followed the stylistic conventions of the era’s pulp adventure aesthetic, emphasizing dramatic action and chiaroscuro-heavy ink work to capture the tension of the frontier. While the series was intended as accessible entertainment for young readers, it remains a notable example of how European publishers localized American classics, shaping the cultural perception of the American West for a generation of European youth.
