Where it came from
Dragon Quest: The Mark of Erdrick was a manga series published in Japan during the late 1980s, serving as a canonical expansion to the narrative of the original Dragon Quest video game trilogy. The series was produced by Enix to broaden the reach of the franchise, leveraging the immense popularity of Akira Toriyama's character designs to establish a cohesive lore for the world of Alefgard.
The illustrations for the series were executed by Kamui Fujiwara, who was tasked with adapting the high-fantasy aesthetic of the games into a more kinetic, serialized manga format. Issue number 3 continues the journey of the protagonist as he ventures further into the world, capturing the sense of exploration and growth central to the RPG experience, and it was generally well-received by fans for maintaining the spirit of the source material.
