Estuary: A Ghost Story #1

Estuary: A Ghost Story #1 was released as part of an independent comic book project that blends atmospheric horror with emotional storytelling. Created by writer and artist John McCubbin, the series was designed to explore themes of grief, memory, and the supernatural landscape, utilizing a distinct, often moody visual style to ground the ethereal narrative in a tactile, haunting reality. The work emerged from the vibrant independent comics scene, where creators often leverage self-publishing or small-press platforms to maintain complete control over their idiosyncratic, genre-defying visions.

The design of the series reflects a deliberate move toward slow-burn storytelling, favoring evocative panels and intricate line work over traditional action-heavy tropes. Critics and readers within the independent community generally received the debut issue as a contemplative departure from mainstream horror, noting how McCubbin’s approach turns the setting itself into an active character. Its identity remains firmly rooted in the tradition of creator-owned comics that prioritize narrative depth and aesthetic experimentation over mass-market conventions.
