Ex-Mutants #17

Ex-Mutants #17 was published in 1994 as part of the second volume of the series, which was originally launched by Eternity Comics in the late 1980s before moving to Malibu Comics' imprint, Bravura. The narrative emerged from the post-apocalyptic subgenre of the era, focusing on a group of humans genetically altered to fight a tyrannical regime. By the time this issue was released, the series was navigating the shifting landscape of the independent comic book market, attempting to distinguish itself through high-concept science fiction themes.

The creative direction for this period of the series was defined by the transition to the Bravura imprint, which was established to provide creator-owned work for industry veterans. The aesthetic reflected the detailed, muscular art style prevalent in 1990s comic illustration, prioritizing action-heavy panels and character-driven stakes. While the series maintains a niche following today, it is primarily remembered as a historical artifact of the brief period when independent publishers sought to challenge the dominance of major comic book houses.
